Reflection 2
Group 4: Healthcare and Immigration
Group 4 explained how healthcare and immigration are connected in the United States. They talked about how many immigrants, especially undocumented ones, struggle to get medical care. The group mentioned that things like high costs, fear of deportation, language barriers, and not having health insurance make it hard for immigrants to see a doctor. Because of these problems, many immigrants wait too long to get help, and their health ends up getting worse. The group also discussed the debate about whether immigrants should be allowed to use public healthcare programs like Medicaid. According to the group, some people believe everyone living in the U.S. should be able to get basic medical care because immigrants work, pay taxes, and help the country. But others worry that expanding healthcare could cost too much money or bring more immigrants into the country. Group 4 pointed out that preventing sickness early is usually cheaper than treating serious emergencies later. They also talked about the health challenges immigrants face before and after coming to the U.S. Some people leave countries where healthcare is not good or where there is violence and instability. This means they may arrive with medical problems or stress. Once they get here, life can still be hard because they have to adjust to new rules, new jobs, and sometimes discrimination. The group said that mental health is a big issue too, because many immigrant communities don’t have access to therapy or feel uncomfortable talking about mental health. Another point the group made was about immigrant children. Many parents are scared to take their kids to the doctor, even if the kids are U.S. citizens. Group 4 talked about how past policies, like the “public charge rule,” made families afraid that getting help would hurt their immigration status. In the end, Group 4 said that the conversation about healthcare and immigration is really about fairness and human rights. They said the U.S. has to decide whether healthcare should be something available to everyone or only to people with certain legal statuses.
Group 3: Immigration and Families
In our group, we talked about how immigration has been happening for a long time and didn’t just start recently. We said that people have always moved to the United States to look for better opportunities, safety, or a chance to start over. Our group learned that immigration started with people coming from different countries looking for freedom, work, or a new life. Even today, immigration continues for a lot of the same reasons people want jobs, education, safety from violence, or a better future for their families. We also discussed why immigration is still going on now. A big reason is that many families come here hoping to escape poverty, dangerous situations, or unstable governments in their home countries. Some people immigrate because they want their kids to have more opportunities than they had growing up. Others come to reunite with family members who are already in the U.S. When we talked about this, we realized that immigration is really about people trying to give their families a chance at a better life. Our group also focused on how children are affected when they grow up with immigrant parents in this country. One thing we talked about is how kids often have to help their parents with English, filling out papers, or understanding how things work in the U.S. This can make kids feel like they have a lot of responsibility at a young age. We also said that kids sometimes grow up balancing two cultures one at home and one at school which can be confusing or stressful. Another thing we mentioned is that children in immigrant families sometimes live with fear or worry, especially if their parents don’t have legal status. We talked about how scary it would be to worry about a parent being taken away or losing your family. Some of us imagined what that would feel like, and it helped us understand how immigration affects a family emotionally, not just financially. Even with these challenges, we said that many children in immigrant families grow up strong, responsible, and proud of their culture. Our group agreed that immigrant families show a lot of strength, especially when they support each other and work hard to build a better life. Overall, our group learned that immigration affects families in many different ways from why they leave their home country to how their children grow up in the U.S. Talking about this helped us understand that immigration is not just a policy issue it’s something that shapes families’ daily lives, emotions, and futures.
Group 2: Environment and American Health
Group 2 talked about how the environment has a big impact on people’s health in the United States. They explained that things like air pollution, water pollution, gas and fuel emissions, and climate change all play a major role in how healthy people are. Their group also talked about how some communities especially low-income neighborhoods and communities of color are exposed to more pollution, which makes environmental health unfair. One of the main points Group 2 talked about was air pollution. They explained how areas with lots of cars, trucks, factories, and power plants have dirty air. This dirty air causes problems like asthma, lung issues, and heart disease. They also mentioned that kids and older adults are the most affected. When kids live in places with bad air, they miss more school because of asthma attacks, which affects their learning and overall health. The group also talked about water pollution. They used the Flint, Michigan water crisis as an example of how dangerous contaminated water can be. Dirty drinking water especially water containing lead can cause serious health problems, including brain development issues in children. Group 2 also explained that some rural towns have polluted water because of chemicals from farms, old pipelines, or waste from factories. Another topic Group 2 focused on was gas and fuel emissions. They talked about how cars, trucks, and factories release harmful chemicals into the air. These gases not only pollute the air but also contribute to climate change. Breathing in these fumes can cause long-term health issues, especially for people living near highways or industrial areas. They also discussed climate change and how it affects health. Group 2 said that these disasters usually hit vulnerable communities the hardest because they don’t always have the resources to recover. The group mentioned how the environment also affects mental health. Living in polluted or unsafe areas can cause stress, fear, and anxiety. But having access to green spaces like parks and forests can help people feel calmer and healthier. Finally, Group 2 talked about food environments. Overall, Group 2 explained that the environment and American health are closely connected. They showed that fixing environmental problems isn’t just about protecting nature it’s also about protecting people and making sure everyone has a fair chance to be healthy.
Very nice reflection!
